Disappointed with your IELTS Result?

If you are disappointed with your IELTS result, you have 2 options:

1. Take the IELTS test again or
2. Ask for re-marking.

Many people were asking me about option # 2 and here is an explanation of what’s involved.

If you believe that you deserve a better score than you were awarded, you can ask for re-marking of your results. You can ask to re-mark the whole test or any part of it (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking). Of course there is a fee, which is roughly a half of the normal IELTS test fee. If your result is changed to a higher score, the fee is refunded.

If you decided to go for remarking, here is what you need to do. Within 6 weeks of your test date, get a form called “IELTS Enquiry on Results Form” from your test center, fill in your name, address, the tests you want to have remarked, sign and date it. Pay the fee and expect your answer back within 6 weeks from the day they receive it at Cambridge.

Here is what happens next: your test paper, your writing or your tape recorded during the Speaking test will be re-marked by a different examiner – not the one in your local test center, but by a trained clerical marker (for Reading and Listening answers) or a Cambridge ESOL-appointed Examiner, employed by the British Council or IDP.

In my opinion, unless you are very sure they’ve misread your answers, in the Reading and Listening there isn’t much of a chance to get a higher score. On the other hand, in the Writing and Speaking your chances are much better, because the score does depend on who marks the work, to some extent.

Let me tell you a true story of A from Romania. She took the IELTS test and was very confident and positive about her results, however… the results arrived and she got only 6.5 in Speaking. A immediately appealed, because she was confident that she deserved more (and her scores in the other sections were also much higher, Bands 8 – 7.5).

Later on she got really pessimistic, after talking to people who assured her that IELTS folks will never give her a higher score because of some kind of conspiracy, that by giving her a higher score, IELTS organization will admit to their guilt and they are never going to do that.

Two month later, a very happy A wrote me a letter about her score being raised from 6.5 to 7 and her money was refunded. Apparently the examiner at Cambridge disagreed with the local Romanian examiner and thought A was a Band 7 candidate.

  1. Hi
    My test date was on 19/01/2019 and here is my score
    S-6.5
    L-7
    R-7
    W-6.5
    I want to recheck my speaking score.Is it possible,because i am late to apply for it

  2. Hi Roshni, the timeframe for rechecking application is 6 weeks from exam date, it seems you missed that window, but I would still recommend that you get in touch with your test centre and ask.

  3. Hi ,

    I sat for my IELTS on 28th Feb 2019
    I scored
    W- 6.5
    L- 9
    R- 9
    S- 9

    I need a minimum of band 7 for written. Should I send it for a reevaluation? Or should I resit for the exam.

  4. Hi Sai, this is an unusual gap between writing and all the rest of your skills. I doubt someone can listen, read and speak like a native speaker, and get only 6.5 for writing. It seems your score could increase as a result of remarking. If you decide to go for it, remember you only have 6 weeks from your exam date to apply, so don’t delay.

  5. Thanks I will reevaluate the writting part. I contacted IDP and was told by them that’s they did realised a huge gap between the writting and the rest. But they assured me that they have already rechecked my written section and that’s the score I got. But told me feel free to submit for reevaluation.

  6. Hi I wrote my IELTS on 23 of March this was my 3rd attempt. I got L 9 R 8.5 S 7.5 and in writing I got only 6.5. in my previous attempts also I had got only 6.5 . I’m in a dilemma about applying for re marking.

  7. Hi ,
    I appeared for IELTS exam in exam in September 2018 , recently I sit for 23 march 2019 . It’s really shocking exactly same result as before in all 4modules . This is really disappointing for me . please suggest what should I do.

  8. Hi Navjot, you can apply for rechecking of your reading test however the chances that the score will change are slim. Answers are clerically marked and the checkers aren’t likely to mark you wrong because they have a list of correct answers.

  9. Sir , I gave the exam 13 April 2019 and I got LRWS-5.5,6,6.5,6 but my listening was very good I am sure about 27 correct answer but I got only 5.5. should I apply for rechecking for listening??

  10. Sir, I appeared on 23 march ,2019. It was my forth attempt ….
    Listening 9
    Reading 7.5
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 7…
    I need 7 in writing as well…. In previous examinations also I scored 6.5 in writing… This time I was sure that I would get 7 or 7.5 in writing as I attempted the exam better than previous ones…. Please suggest me…. Is it possible that BC IELTS could increase my 0.5 bands, if I reevaluate the writing section only.

  14. My score L 8.5,R 6,W 6 ,S 6.5 can I ask for rescore in speaking?
    Appeared on 27th April.

  15. You certainly can, if you decide to do so, contact your IELTS test centre as soon as you can, there is a timeframe for EOR submission and if you miss it, you won’t be able to apply for re-evaluation.

  16. Listening 7
    Speaking 6.5
    Reading 5
    Writing 5.5
    Should I apply for revaluation ?
    Please suggest me ..

  17. Hi sir… I scored 5.5 in reading… But my test was good i deserve 6 bands… Now i want to re-evaluate my reading…. What r the chances of getting more 0.5 bands in reading….Answer me fast

  18. Hello sir I appeared on 23 may 2019 and my score is L 6 R 7 W 6 S 5.5 Should I go for revaluation ???

  19. Nawab Basalath Yar Khan

    Hi sir this is my 2nd attempt I appeared on 23 may 2019 I got L 5.5 S 6.5 R 4.5 W 5.5. Should I go for rechecking.

  20. I gave exam on april 62019 . My scores were LSRW7.5,8.5,6,6. Should i go with re evaluation or re exam ?? This is the second time i got the same score in reading n writing and a flip in listening and speaking

  21. Hi Simone

    I recently gave my CDT and my scores are as follows,

    Listening = 8.5
    Reading = 7.5
    Speaking = 8.5
    Writing = 6.5

    Even I’m previous 2 attempts in 2016 and 2017 I scored 8 and 7.5 in writing. I’m perplexed as to how they could grade me so low.

    Looking forward to hearing from you

  22. Hi Steven, without seeing what you wrote I can’t comment in detail, of course, but in general it is possible that they graded you lower than you deserve, and in that case remarking can help. There is a period of time when you can apply for re-evaluation, the first thing would be to find out when it ends, so that you don’t miss it. If they change your score as a result of re-evaluation, your money will be refunded.

  23. Hi 👋🏿

    I gave my CDT test a couple of weeks ago and the results are as follows

    Listening = 8.5
    Reading = 7.5
    Writing = 6.5
    Speaking = 8.5

    However, writing score seems to be odd as In my previous 2 attempts in 2016 & 2017 I scored 7.5 & 8 respectively. Please advise whether remarking is worth it for 0.5 band as it will help boost my immigration process by 55 points. Thanks looking forward to hearing from you.

  24. Hi Simone Is it true that if you’ve got a difference in 2 bands in the remaining modules, there is an automatic recheck ?

  25. Hi this was my first attempt I scored 5.5 in writing is that too low to apply for a good university and will it cause any problem in visa

  26. Hello Kavya, the best thing is to check the requirements of universities you consider to find out what IELTS scores they require. Your question is too general in nature – you need to be more specific, to receive a helpful answer.

  27. Hey, I am Mudit here.My IELTS score are
    1:R-8
    2:L-8
    3:w-5.5
    4:S-7
    Should I go for revaluation of writing since I need minimum of 6.

  28. Hi Mudit, it doesn’t seem very likely that a person who is Reading and Listening at a band 8 level, and speaking at a band 7 level would write at band 5.5 level. If you feel you deserve a better score, consider applying for re-marking.

  29. hloo..
    can u plz tell me about remarking refund …after how many days of new rechecked result ,fee is refunded if band score changes?

  30. L9
    R8.5
    W6.5
    S7.5
    I wanted to know if it is fine to give both writing and speaking for Revaluation as it cost me the same…but im only sure about writing. If only one module score changes will i be getting a refund.

  31. Is it okay to give two modules for revaluation …if only one module score change will i get a refund

  32. Remember, the score can go up or down (or stay unchanged). If you are happy to take the risk of your Speaking score going down, then you can ask to get 2 modules remarked.

  33. Hlo, I gave my Ielts exam this month and I got 6 band each in listening ,writing, and reading but in speaking they have given me just 4.5? But I think that my speaking was better, at least I deserve 5.5 but not 4.5..pls tell me that can I go for revaluation?

  34. Hi Sandy, if you feel you deserve a better score, you can apply for remarking. To do that contact your IELTS test centre as soon as possible so that you don’t miss that window of time when you’re allowed to order remarking.

  35. Sir I have secured s-6.5
    W-6.5bands but overall 7.5 bands
    Would I fill reevaluation ?
    Is there any risk of band decrease if I fill it for both
    Whether the fee for both remain same?

  36. Hi sir my scores are 7.5, 7, 7, 6.5 in the listening, reading, writing and speaking respectively. But i need 7in speaking to get qualified. Shall i go ahead with remarking system?

  37. Sir my result is (6 in R )
    (L-6)
    (S-5.5)
    (W-5)
    Overall 5.5
    In british council should i go for revaluation i need y in each module suggest me wht can i do
    Go for revaluation or not

  38. I got 5.5 overall band score reding 6.0 listning 6.0 writing 5.0 speking 5.5 can i fill recheaking i give exam 13 june and result declared 26 june ?

  39. Hi I am Ergashev. I took a test in 27th July 2019. My scores are:
    Listening 8.5
    Reading 9
    Writing 6.5
    Speaking 6.5
    I think I deserve 7.5 both in speaking and writing. And I consistently was marked either 7 or 7.5 in both speaking and writing. I truly wanted to score 8. Do you recommend revaluation?

  40. The gap between your Listening/Reading and Writing/Speaking seems unusual, and if you feel you deserve more than 6.5, then re-evaluation may help. If your score changes even in one of the skills, you will get a refund for the fee you paid for re-evaluation.
